What do they have in common? Stencil art! I have a new found respect for stencil art. It began when I visited the Australian Stencil Art Prize 2010 at the Oh Really Gallery last year and I fell in love with a great design by a very talented 16 year old. This infatuation continued while travelling in South America where I saw designs that completely blew my mind.

It is difficult to imagine the number of hours/days/weeks that it would take to create some of these designs. The patience that would be required to cut the multiple layers of stencil to create the detail in the images is quite amazing. Check out the detailed work of Cabaio Stencil in Buenos Aires!!! Awesome!!!!! I have loads of favourites from my trip but how can you not love the Swine Flu Pig or the Ram Man!

Since returning from South America I have certainly been noticing more stencil art, although I am sure it has always been there. I love the “Free Speech” stencil that has recently appeared of Enmore Road.

Don’t miss the chance to see some great Australian stencil art at Oh Really Gallery. E.L.K is having a solo exhibition titled “this is why we can’t have nice things”. It opens on Thursday 3 March 2011. See you there.
